Creaven occupies the western edge of Cortenmaas, where the desert does not end so much as erode into a narrow seam of coast. Its single great port receives what the interior cannot produce–timber, metal, grain–and sends outward what the sands yield in return: resin, glass, and cured hides. Smaller harbors cling to the shoreline, their boats working short tides and colder waters, while beyond them the land withdraws into heat and distance.
Inland, the country is punctuated by oasis cities set far enough apart to feel provisional. Their buildings are cut from sandstone and hardened until they hold against wind, surfaces worn to a dull sheen by sand in constant motion. Streets are narrow, shaded where they can be, and marked by the movement of caravans that arrive thin with dust and leave burdened with it. Trade shapes these places, but so does scarcity; water is measured, stored, and guarded.
